Yadessa Aga, a 32-year-old Amazon software engineer, died after being rescued unconscious from the waters of Lake Tahoe, Nevada, in an incident that authorities are investigating as an apparent accidental drowning.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office reported that emergency crews responded around 8:00 p.m. Monday to the North Sand Harbor boat ramp, where several people had already managed to pull Aga out of the water.
Agents and medical services began resuscitation maneuvers at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
He swam towards some rocks before disappearing underwater
According to what the Sheriff's Office told the San Francisco Chronicle, Aga was swimming toward a group of rocks located offshore in the late afternoon when he disappeared underwater.
The authorities are keeping the investigation open to determine precisely the circumstances of the death, although the case is preliminarily being treated as an accidental drowning.
Aga, a resident of Austin, Texas, had visited the lake after attending a conference hosted by his church, according to a fundraising campaign created by family and friends.
The hidden danger of the waters of Lake Tahoe
Although Sand Harbor is known for its sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, Lake Tahoe maintains very low temperatures even during the summer.
Specialists explain that the phenomenon is due to the great depth of the lake, the constant melting of ice and the rise of cold water from the deepest layers to the surface.
The Take Care Tahoe educational campaign warns that sudden immersion in these waters can cause thermal shock, speeding up breathing and causing muscle stiffness, making it difficult for a person to stay afloat.
According to that initiative, an average of seven people drown each year in Lake Tahoe due to low water temperatures.
They remember him as a talented and generous young man.
Friends and family described Aga as a kind, humble person committed to his community.
“His genuine kindness, warmth and joy made everyone feel loved and welcome,” notes the fundraising campaign created to help cover funeral expenses.
The initiative also highlights that he was deeply appreciated by his family, his church and those who had the opportunity to know him.
As of Thursday morning, more than $15,000 had been raised.
From Ethiopia to a career at Amazon
Pastor Temesgen Mengesha Dabsu of Grace Lutheran Church in El Cerrito, California, recalled that Aga emigrated from Ethiopia to pursue graduate studies in the United States before becoming a software engineer for Amazon.
"He was widely known as a talented, hard-working, humble young man with a promising future. He carried with him great hope for his family and his community," said the religious.
He also noted that Aga was the son of a retired Ethiopian Airlines pilot.
The expressions of condolences also multiplied on social networks, where friends mourned the death of the engineer and highlighted his talent and human quality.
Meanwhile, authorities indicated that the investigation into the exact cause of death remains open.
