Chicago authorities are searching for a man who allegedly shot at Border Patrol agents
The Department of Homeland Security reported that shots were fired at Border Patrol agents during a migrant raid in Chicago
A driver fired shots at Border Patrol agents as they conducted migrant arrests in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood on Saturday, according to a statement on social media from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The DHS reported that Border Patrol agents were conducting “Immigration operations,” such as those near conducted by ICE, enforcement 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue, when a man driving a black Jeep opened fire on them. A cell phone video recorded around noon on West 26th Street showed federal agents confronting residents. A video also showed Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino at the scene, holding what appears to be a tear gas canister. Authorities indicated the incident began near South Sawyer Avenue and West 26th Street. Border Patrol agents were conducting operations when, according to DHS, a man driving a black Jeep fired shots at them and fled.
DHS stated that "an undetermined number of agitators also threw a paint can and bricks at Border Patrol vehicles. The Chicago Police Department was called in for assistance and cleared the area. The shooter and vehicle remain at large, and the situation is dynamic."
The incident later spilled over to the intersection of West 23rd Street and Sawyer Avenue, where Chicago police officers could be seen attempting to disperse the crowd, according to NBC Chicago.
The Department of Homeland Security noted that in the past two months, they have seen an increase in assaults and obstructions directed against their agents during operations.
“These confrontations highlight the dangers our agents face daily and the growing aggression against law enforcement. The violence must stop.”
DHS reiterated in the statement. The operations are part of the Trump administration's policy of raids and deportations, which has also deployed Border Patrol agents to conduct migrant detention raids. No arrests have been made. DHS said the shooter remains at large. With information from EFE.
