DEA hits the Sinaloa Cartel with more than 600 detainees and tons of drugs seized
The operation involved DEA agents in 23 field divisions within the United States and in seven foreign regions, without mentioning which ones
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced the results of a massive operation aimed at dismantling the Sinaloa Cartel, which it described as one of the most violent and powerful drug cartel in the world, “responsible for flooding the United States with fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin.”
The agency reported that the arrests of 617 people are part of its “offensive against the networks” of the criminal group “around the world,” which were carried out by DEA agents in 23 divisions within the country and in seven “foreign regions” in operations that occurred from August 25 to 29.
In February, the Trump Administration designated the Sinaloa Cartel, along with seven other groups, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, asserting that the organization remains one of the most significant threats to public safety, public health, and national security.
In addition to the arrests, the DEA reported the seizure of 2,209 kilograms of methamphetamine. 7,469 kilos of cocaine and 480 kilos of fentanyl powder.
“These results demonstrate DEA’s strong commitment to protecting the American people,” said DEA Administrator Terrance Cole. “Every kilogram of poison seized, every dollar confiscated from the cartels, and every arrest we make represents lives saved and communities defended. The DEA will not relent until the Sinaloa Cartel is completely dismantled.”
Brian M. Clark, special agent in charge of the Los Angeles Field Division, stated that while the figures reflect a one-week snapshot, efforts to combat the cartel continue year-round.
“The reach of the Sinaloa Cartel is vast and relentless. This ruthless cartel seeks profit, flooding our communities with its poison, with no regard for human suffering. Therefore, the DEA’s work remains crucial and precise. The success achieved during this operation is a direct result of the tireless and exceptional work of the men and women of the DEA.”added Clark.
Mexico did not participate in operation
After the DEA's announcement, the Mexican government admitted that it did not participate in the recent operation, although Omar Garcia Harfuch, Mexico's Secretary of Security, assured that Mexico carries out actions against the Sinaloa Cartel "on a permanent basis" but did not collaborate with the aforementioned deployment.
"In Mexico, we have been making significant arrests on a permanent basis related to the Sinaloa Cartel. Related to an operation or a large operation by the international DEA and involving Mexico, no, we have not had any joint operation," said the official.
