Government creates an anti-terrorist operational group focused on persecuting the “radical left”
The order seeks to mobilize federal law enforcement to investigate liberal groups, citing concerns about domestic terrorism
According to the order signed in the Oval Office, this working group integrates different federal agencies to confront these groups, which include Antifa.
The signed text assures that the current “political violence is not a series of isolated incidents nor does it arise spontaneously. Rather, it is the result of sophisticated and organized campaigns of targeted intimidation, radicalization, threats and violence, the objective of which is to silence dissenting voices, limit political activity, influence political decisions and hinder the functioning of a democratic society.”
According to analysts, this order is one of the first important steps in Trump’s promised offensive against left-leaning political entities, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday.
During the signing, the Republican was supported by Attorney General Pam Bondi, who praised the president for “taking the handcuffs off” law enforcement and added that the objective is to go after “any organized group,” without clearly defining it.
The president signed the memo shortly after The New York Times reported that the Justice Department had ordered several U.S. attorneys' offices to open investigations into the Open Society Foundations, a progressive grantmaking network founded by Democratic memo maker George Soros.
Trump has blamed the “radical left” for the wave of political violence sweeping the country, including the murder of ultra-conservative activist Charlie Kirk and a recent shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility.
The memo instructs Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTF) and federal agencies such as the Department of Justice and the Department of the Treasury to dismantle financing networks that support these groups.
