Andy Beshear, governor of Kentucky, demands that Mitch McConnell speak in person about whether his deteriorating health still allows him to represent citizens in the Senate or otherwise present his resignation from the position he holds.
The Republican legislator has been repeatedly absent from his political obligations due to several episodes in which his integrity has been at risk to the point of ending up hospitalized.
McConnell has not been seen in public since June 14 when he was rushed to hospital due to an unspecified medical condition.
Since then, staff from his office have published statements and two photographs where the 84-year-old politician appears with his wife Elaine Chao from the medical institution where they monitor his health.
In the published texts it is stated that the senator is working on his pending tasks and is awaiting developments in Congress. However, his detractors think otherwise and rule out his possible return.
Three weeks ago, Democrat Andy Beshear wrote a letter requesting a detailed report explaining what was happening to the longest-serving senator in American history.
As governor, I ask that you fully inform Kentuckians about your current health status,” part of the document stated.
Given the lack of response and due to the pressure generated, the Kentucky president's request is now even greater, as it requires him to offer an explanation personally.
“As governor of the state you serve, I ask that you directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and demonstrate your ability to serve, or resign.
According to our research, a Senate vacancy occurs when a senator dies, resigns, or is expelled by a vote of the Senate itself.
“If you are not willing to voluntarily demonstrate that you still have the ability to serve, I will insist that Leader (John) Thune fully investigate your situation, inform the American people and begin the process if appropriate,” he emphasized.
In recent years, Mitch McConnell has fallen spectacularly at least twice, while on another couple of occasions he froze in front of those listening to him and also got a large cut on his face without mentioning details about it.
