Within the framework of the 250th anniversary of the United States, Pope Leo XIV launched a strong message in defense of immigrants, stating that welcoming and protecting those who seek a better life is part of the country's founding values ​​and human dignity.

The pontiff's message was focused on the role of immigrants within American society.

“Defending human life also includes welcoming, protecting and helping immigrants, whose hopes, sacrifices and contributions have been part of the history of this country since its beginnings,” wrote Leo XIV.

The Pope added that welcoming those who come seeking a better future “is not only an act of charity,” but a recognition of the inherent dignity of every person.

The message comes at a time of intense debate about the immigration policies promoted by President Donald Trump's administration, marked by an increase in deportations, ICE raids and greater restrictions on requesting asylum.

Lampedusa, a symbol of migration

In addition to publishing the letter, Leo XIV traveled this July 4 to Lampedusa, the Italian island that has become one of the main arrival points for migrants crossing the Mediterranean.

During his speech, he asked governments to adopt a comprehensive strategy that allows them to “welcome, protect, support and integrate migrants,” while calling for improving conditions in countries of origin to reduce forced migration.

It is not the first time that the pontiff has established this position. Since his election, he has insisted that human dignity must prevail in any immigration policy and has questioned measures that criminalize those seeking refuge or a new opportunity.
