Republicans want to approve $72 billion more for ICE and CBP without a democratic vote
Republicans in the Senate are ready to approve billions of dollars for deportations and border security
The Judiciary and National Security Committees of the Senate, led by Republicans, published their legislative proposal for the Reconciliation bill. ion of $72 billion dollars to fund the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency and the Border Patrol through 2029.
With this proposal, Republicans do not need Democrats' vote for approval, which they could achieve after last month the Senate and House of Representatives approved the process to move forward with the special budget allocation.
“Senate Democrats refuse to vote for spending a single dollar for the security of our borders or enforcement of our immigration laws, even against the most violent illegal immigrants,” af said Republican Rand Paul (Kentucky), chairman of the National Security Commission. “To ensure funding for these vital functions, my committee will vote at the end of this month to provide the necessary funds.”
That is, by the end of May, the Republicans will have approved more budget for ICE and the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency, on which the Border Patrol depends, for immigration actions, including operations against undocumented immigrants.
Democrats have refused to support this budget draft demanding substantial changes in the way immigrant detentions are carried out: avoid that agents use masks, avoid violence in arrests, not make arrests in homes and other private areas without an executive order, among others.
The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Republican Chuck Grassley (Iowa), also defended the plan of his party members.
“The Democrats set a negative precedent by paralyzing DHS for 76 days, which forced brave law enforcement officers and their families to lose several paychecks,” justified Grassle and. “Sadly, the irresponsible shutdown of DHS by the Democrats demonstrated that they remain the party of open borders and decreased funding for police.”
It is notable that Republicans accuse Democrats of wanting “open borders,” but there are no Democrats who claim they want such a policy, but they reject the way immigrants are detained, violating even their constitutional due process.
“We Republicans will not allow our country to go backwards due to the radical agenda and contrary to the forces of order of the Democrats,” Grassley added. Senate Judiciary Committee is taking steps to provide certainty to federal law enforcement and safer streets for American families.”
What would the budget be used for?
The Committee National Security project includes $7.5 billion dollars “to hire, train, pay and equip National Security Investigations staff through fiscal year 2029.”
The Judiciary Committee text would allocate $30.73 billion for the hiring, paying, training and equipping ICE personnel, including officers, agents, investigators, attorneys and support staff.
Both texts point to the budget plan until 2029, that is, one year after the second term of President Trump ends.
$22.57 billion would also be allocated for the hiring, training, compensation, and equipping of CBP personnel.
$3.5 billion are considered to improve border security, “including air and sea operations and efforts to combat drug-trafficking, as well as control of people entering or leaving the-country.”
There is a billion dollars to the Secret Service to improve the security of the White House complex, this in relation to the construction of the ballroom.
Democrats reject proposal
Democratic minority leader Chuck Schumer (New York) criticized the budget proposal.
“Republicans live on another planet than American families. Republicans saw families drowning in debt and decided that what they really needed was more raids and a ballroom for Trump,” he said.
