Some areas of the Pentagon are evacuated due to an incident with hazardous materials
A hazardous materials team is responding to an incident at the building.
The Pentagon is closed and several areas of the building were evacuated while specialized hazardous materials teams head to defense facilities.
The building's systems "detected an air quality issue that requires precautionary measures until its severity is determined," a Pentagon spokesperson told CNN reporter Haley Britzky.
The Arlington County Fire Department also confirmed that its hazardous materials team is responding to an ongoing “hazardous materials incident.”
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed that Pentagon systems “have detected an air quality issue that requires precautionary measures until its severity is determined.”
“The Department is implementing standard protective protocols, including a stay-at-home order for the affected area,” Parnell stated. “Response teams are deployed and ready to provide support to building occupants.”
The second through fifth floors, in hallways four through seven of the sprawling Pentagon complex, have been closed, according to two sources consulted by CNN.
A third source informed the same outlet that police in the building wear gas masks and full chemical protection equipment.
