While much of the industry seeks to attract buyers with increasingly larger batteries and higher range figures, Audi decided to follow a different path. The German brand is working on a model that focuses on making better use of each available kilowatt, with the intention of reducing energy consumption without affecting the driving experience.

That proposal will take shape with the new Audi A2 e-tron, a fully electric vehicle that will arrive in the fall of 2026 and will become the gateway to the company's zero-emission family. In addition to recovering a name with history within the brand, the model aims to become the most efficient electric car that Audi has developed so far.

The manufacturer anticipated a consumption of just 12.8 kWh per 60 miles under the WLTP cycle, a figure that places it among the most efficient electric compact cars in its category.

Aerodynamics play a decisive role

The project recovers the philosophy of the original A2, a model remembered for its lightweight construction and for offering very low consumption for its time. Now that idea is transferred to the world of electric mobility through a body designed to offer the least possible air resistance.

Audi achieved an aerodynamic coefficient of 0.24, the best recorded for a compact of the brand. To achieve this, the vehicle incorporates a softly shaped front, a roof that promotes air flow and a rear part carefully designed to reduce turbulence.

It also adds solutions such as air curtains around the front wheels, deflectors in the wheel arches, less separation between the body and the tires, as well as active cooling inlets that only open when the system really needs to dissipate heat. According to the brand, these improvements allow us to reduce energy consumption by approximately 0.9 kWh per 60 miles compared to a similar vehicle without these developments.

An electrical system optimized to spend less

The A2 e-tron will use a 140 kW electric motor, equivalent to about 188 horsepower. However, the main objective will not be to offer spectacular accelerations, but to achieve superior energy performance.

To achieve this, Audi redesigned a good part of the propulsion system. The electronics incorporate silicon carbide semiconductors, while the motor uses new materials and optimized winding to reduce losses.

Added to this is a revised transmission with low-friction lubricants and a gear ratio designed to improve efficiency at highway speeds.

The manufacturer assures that this set can be up to 10% more efficient than that used in previous generations.

Technology to make better use of energy

Another key element will be the 61 kWh LFP battery, a technology that stands out for its thermal stability, greater durability and the possibility of carrying out full charges with less impact on its useful life.

Audi also integrated the cells directly into the package structure using a cell-to-pack design, a solution that optimizes available space and improves energy density. Added to this is an advanced thermal management system that permanently monitors the battery to maximize its performance and achieve a charging efficiency close to 89.6%.

The new compact will also offer Vehicle-to-Load and Vehicle-to-Home functions, allowing you to power external devices or supply power to a home when a compatible charger is available.
