BRZ STI Sport Type RA: Subaru's super exclusive jewel
Subaru has one of the most special variants of the BRZ, a model tuned with technology inspired by endurance cars and produced in limited quantities
For those looking for a compact, balanced and accessible sports car, the Subaru BRZ has become a benchmark. Its pure driving dynamics, low weight, and traditional focus on rear-wheel drive have won over thousands of fans.
But it has also left a lingering feeling: the desire for an even more extreme version, one that enhances the model's sporty DNA without losing its original essence.
That yearning has been heard, though not entirely. Subaru decided to present a very special variant of the BRZ, created to satisfy the most demanding enthusiasts. This is the BRZ STI Sport Type RA, an edition inspired by the world of endurance racing and with a level of detail that few expected. The announcement generated immediate enthusiasm and also surprise: this model will not cross Japanese borders, at least for now. Even so, its existence has reignited the debate about the potential of the BRZ and the possibility that Subaru will develop more radical versions for markets like the United States and Latin America. An exclusive edition with racing DNA. The BRZ STI Sport Type RA is based on the demands of the Super Taikyu category, one of the toughest endurance racing platforms in Japan. Contrary to what many anticipated, Subaru didn't transform it into a pure STI model, but rather conceived it as a refined edition, with a greater focus on precision and control than a massive power increase. Exclusivity is a key part of the project: only 300 units will be built, all reserved for the Japanese market. However, precedents like the Toyota Supra Final Edition demonstrate that an international release is not out of the question. Subaru's approach has been clear: to improve the BRZ's dynamic experience by making meticulous adjustments. The package includes an aerodynamic and suspension kit optimized for the track, which provides greater stability at high speeds, more reliable braking, and cleaner response in tight corners.
Work was also done to reduce the engine's internal tolerances, modifying elements such as pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, flywheel, and clutch cover. The result is smoother operation, with less vibration and progressive acceleration typical of a lightweight race car.
Technical details that bring it closer to a track car
Subaru equipped this edition with technology taken directly from competition development. One of the most notable elements is the cooling fin housing for the rear differential, based on the one used by the “Team SDA Engineering BRZ CNF Concept” prototype from the Super Taikyu and the “Cup Car Basic” race car. This system prevents the differential oil from overheating under extreme use, preserving traction even after several laps on the track.
The electronics also receive significant upgrades with the Rev Sync/Flat Shift Assist function.
Both features bring the BRZ experience closer to that of a real endurance race car, allowing this limited edition to combine street handling with track-ready feel.
To complement this package, Subaru installed a new suspension system with ZF dampers and STI flex-link components, along with higher-performance Brembo brakes. The result is a more precise, more stable vehicle with effective control even on technical corners.
A subtle yet powerful style
While most of the improvements are technical, Subaru also introduced aesthetic and functional elements that set the Type RA apart. Among them are:
The package enhances the sporty appearance without being over the top, maintaining the BRZ's minimalist spirit.
Price, availability, and the dream of seeing it outside of Japan
Subaru confirmed that the BRZ STI Sport Type RA will have only 300 units and a price close to $35,400 USD, a competitive cost considering its exclusivity and high-level upgrades. However, simply wanting to buy one won't be enough: there will be a lottery at the end of November to select the potential buyers.
