A Venezuelan woman arrested by ICE desperately asks to be deported with her son
Yusmari Galíndez, a Venezuelan immigrant, is experiencing one of her worst fears: being deported from the United States without her son.
“I can’t move from here without my son,” is the phrase a Venezuelan immigrant repeats to herself over and over again from a detention center in Houston, Texas. Yusmari Galíndez was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and now only has one request: to be deported with her son.
"I'm afraid they'll take me out without my son. The solution I want is for them to bring him to me and take me out that same day," the young woman said, through a report by the Telemundo network.
Yusmari was arrested on April 3 after committing a traffic violation. Her 13-year-old son was at school when she was arrested, and she had to contact a neighbor to pick him up. He was then left in the care of his stepfather. However, Yusmari's deportation process appears to be complete, so she is desperately seeking reunification before leaving. "They told me 'sign here'... with profanity." The Venezuelan immigrant arrived in the United States with her partner and son under the CBP One program, which was later revoked, as was the humanitarian parole they received. After being held in the Houston detention center, Yusmari says she was made to sign documentation without any explanation. She claims it was her deportation. "They made me sign my deportation without telling me or translating anything. They told me 'sign here,' with profanity," she said. "They can take me out at any time without my son," he said through tears.
Although his son is in the care of his stepfather, he could also be in danger of deportation. The 13-year-old, who has not been able to reunite with his mother due to the lack of a power of attorney, told Telemundo that living in the U.S. without his mother "is going to be very hard."
"Who wants to be separated from their mother? Nobody. I really want to go with her," said the teenager.
