2-month-old baby dies of asphyxiation after sleeping in the same bed with his drugged mother in Pennsylvania
Authorities arrested Thalia Matos in Pennsylvania for the death of her 2-month-old son; the woman allegedly consumed adulterated marijuana
A 28-year-old woman, identified as Thalia Matos, was arrested in Pennsylvania after the death of her two-month-old son, Royce Coxson. The events occurred last July in the town of Carbondale. According to the criminal complaint, Matos admitted to sharing a bed with the infant and her other 5-year-old daughter after consuming marijuana. However, blood tests revealed that the THC in the mother's system was mixed with formaldehyde (embalming fluid). Neighbors in the area told police that both the woman and the baby emitted a chemical odor characteristic of this substance. Negligence and Ignored Warnings The medical investigation concluded that Royce's cause of death was asphyxiation by mechanical compression. Despite Matos having previously attended an educational course at a hospital about the dangers of co-sleeping, she chose to ignore the safety recommendations. In addition to negligence, authorities noted that the suspect attempted to mislead detectives by claiming she was alone with her children the night of the tragedy. However, security camera footage showed several people entering and leaving the apartment. “Co-sleeping, particularly when the caregiver is under the influence of marijuana or other drugs, can have fatal consequences,” said Brian Gallagher, Lackawanna County District Attorney. Matos faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of children. After being arrested last Monday, she was released on $40,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on February 17.
