Death toll rises to 14 from Mexico's Interoceanic train derailment

The number of fatalities from the derailment of a train on the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which occurred in recent days in the state of Oaxaca, southern Mexico, increased to 14 on the first day of 2026, following the death of A 73-year-old woman who was under medical care has died, the Mexican Navy (Semar) reported this Thursday.

Semar also expressed its “solidarity and condolences to her family and loved ones” and noted that “we remain in coordination with the competent authorities for comprehensive care.”
This new figure adds to the 13 deaths previously confirmed by the Attorney General's Office (FGR), following the derailment on Sunday, December 28.
On December 30, the Mexican Attorney General's Office reported that it had completed the corresponding autopsies of these victims, while detailing that “various immediate actions have been carried out with The goal is to clarify the facts as soon as possible,” as well as to “prioritize reparations for the victims.”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum guaranteed on Tuesday that her government will provide “comprehensive reparations” for the victims and families of the train derailment on the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
“Obviously, there will be comprehensive reparations if the families so decide,” the president stated during her morning press conference.
The Mexican leader, who visited those hospitalized on Monday afternoon, indicated that an initial payment of 30,000 pesos (approximately $1,670 USD) has been provided to the families of those affected.
But he guaranteed that there will be “full reparation for the damages” as determined by the insurance company and the Prosecutor's Office. “Everyone will receive support, both those who were hospitalized or are still hospitalized, and those who unfortunately lost a loved one,” he noted. He added that investigations are already underway to clarify the causes of the accident, although the causes have not yet been updated, while the black box stolen from the train is being analyzed.
