He murdered his wife during an argument over a Nintendo Switch console in Kansas
Joshua Orlando, 29, pleaded guilty to the murder of his wife, Ivy Unruh, 25, in April in Wichita, Kansas.
A Kansas man pleaded guilty to the murder of his estranged wife after a confrontation occurred when he tried to return a Nintendo Switch to her, in a case that, according to the investigation, was marked by a history of alleged abuse within the relationship.
Joshua Orlando, 29, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping in the death of Ivy Unruh, 25, according to Sedgwick County court records.
The victim died days after the attack
The attack occurred on the morning of April 17 at the Remington Apartments, located in Wichita.
When officers arrived at the scene after receiving a 911 call, they found Unruh seriously injured by a gunshot wound to the upper body near one of the buildings in the residential complex.
The young woman was taken to a hospital, where she died several days later.
Authorities also located a 9-millimeter Sig Sauer P365 semi-automatic pistol next to the body.
Defendant called 911 and admitted shooting
According to court documents, it was Orlando himself who called emergency services after the shooting.
During the conversation with the operator, he explained that they had both argued and claimed that his wife had hit him.
At one point during the call he directly admitted having shot.
“I shot him, I shot him,” the defendant said, according to the statement included in the investigation.
Documents indicate that when officers arrived at the scene, Orlando was taken into custody. While the paramedics treated the victim, the man tearfully asked that they try to save her and stated: “I know she didn't want to hurt me.”
The discussion started when I was going to return the console
The investigation indicates that Orlando went to Unruh's apartment to return a Nintendo Switch console, one of the assets whose possession had been established during the divorce process initiated by the victim in August 2025.
According to the defendant's testimony, he waited for Unruh at the entrance of the building with the console inside a bag.
When she arrived, the two began arguing and, according to Orlando, the woman hit him with the bag containing the device.
The defendant told the police that the impact caused him pain and that, at that moment, he pulled out a firearm and fired a single shot “without aiming,” while trying to cover his face with his arm.
The investigation revealed a history of alleged abuse
Investigators obtained testimony from the manager of the apartment complex where Unruh lived.
According to her statement, the young woman explained when renting the home that she was looking to get away from an abusive ex-partner and that, for that reason, she valued the building's security measures.
The administrator also claimed that Unruh asked her not to contact her former landlord because she maintained a friendship with Orlando.
The investigation also shows that the victim had started the divorce process months before the crime. Documentation filed in court stated that Orlando would keep his gun, while the Nintendo Switch would remain in Unruh's possession.
With the guilty plea, the judicial process enters its final phase.
Joshua Orlando will be sentenced on August 28, when a judge determines the final sentence. Under Kansas law, the defendant faces a sentence that would require him to spend at least 38 years and nine months in prison before being eligible for parole.
