Army veteran killed during argument over parking spot at Florida Walmart
The woman who fired the shot remained at the scene and assured authorities that she acted in self-defense. The Prosecutor's Office will determine whether to file charges
An argument over a parking spot ended with the death of a US Army veteran outside a Walmart in North Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida.
The victim was identified as Bart Diguglielmo, 62 years old and father of three children. The man was shot in the abdomen during an altercation that occurred Tuesday afternoon and later died at a hospital, authorities reported.
The woman said she shot in self-defense.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office reported the incident occurred around 12:28 p.m. in the parking lot of the Walmart located at 7900 W. McNab Road.
According to the official statement, the preliminary investigation determined that Diguglielmo and an adult woman had a verbal argument over a parking space before the shooting occurred.
Investigators indicated that the woman remained at the scene after the shooting, cooperated with detectives and claimed that she acted in self-defense.
When officers arrived at the establishment they found the man with a gunshot wound. Paramedics took him to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Video captured the moment of the shooting
According to local media, a video recorded with a cell phone shows part of the confrontation.
The images allegedly capture the moment the woman shoots while Diguglielmo walks towards her.
A witness told WPLG station that the woman had warned the man that she would shoot him if he continued to approach her.
So far, authorities have not revealed the identity of the alleged shooter.
The family questions what happened
Amanda Diguglielmo, the victim's daughter, expressed disbelief at the outcome of the altercation.
“I don't think anyone deserves to lose their life for a parking spot,” he told local media WPLG.
The woman also rejected versions that suggested that her father had made some kind of advance toward the alleged attacker.
"I heard that one media outlet said that everything was for a parking spot. Another stated that my father made some kind of approach towards the woman, and I completely refute that. My father was not that kind of person. He was not perfect, but not someone who would do something that justified going to this extreme," he said.
The Prosecutor's Office will decide whether to file charges
The Sheriff's Office reported that the case will be referred to the Broward County State Attorney's Office, which will analyze the evidence collected during the investigation to determine whether criminal charges should be filed against the woman.
To date, no formal charges have been announced and the investigation remains open.
