Shock in Brazil: a young woman died after being thrown without a rope during a bungee jump
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, died during a bungee jumping activity in Brazil after an apparent failure in the safety system
What began as a day of adventure ended in a tragedy that has generated shock in Brazil and a wave of indignation on social networks. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, a 21-year-old girl, died this Saturday after participating in an extreme jumping activity in the state of São Paulo.
According to initial investigations, the young woman was thrown into the void from a bridge between 30 and 40 meters high without the security system being properly connected. The accident occurred on the so-called Ponte do Esqueleto, in Limeira, a place known for the practice of adventure sports.
The case once again put the spotlight on the security protocols in this type of activities and opened an investigation to determine if there was negligence on the part of the organizers.
What is known about the accident
According to the São Paulo Military Police, Maria Eduarda was participating in an activity organized by private companies dedicated to bungee jumping and rope jumping when she received the signal to jump without having been properly secured.
Witnesses reported that the young woman was accompanied to the edge of the bridge and thrown into the void. Just seconds later, the desperate screams began from those who warned that the main security element was missing.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but doctors could only confirm his death due to the severity of the injuries sustained in the fall.
Who was Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas
The victim was 21 years old, lived in Jandira, in the state of São Paulo, and had a degree in Physical Education and Sports Management, according to Brazilian media.
On his social networks he shared photographs of trips, outdoor activities and moments related to sports, one of his great passions. Minutes before the accident, he had published images of the place and the bracelets given to those who would participate in the experience.
One of his last publications became especially relevant after learning of the tragedy. Along with an image of the bridge he wrote: “Who was the crazy woman who let me come jump off a bridge?”
The phrase quickly went viral in Brazil, where thousands of users expressed their pain and demanded answers about what happened.
What the authorities are investigating
Initially, six people linked to the organization of the event were detained to give statements. However, the investigation continues to establish who had direct responsibility for the security measures applied during the activity.
According to the information released by the authorities, several of those involved could face charges related to homicide with eventual intent, a legal figure used when someone consciously assumes a risk that can cause the death of another person.
In addition, an attempt is made to determine whether the responsible companies met all the necessary requirements to operate this type of extreme experiences.
The tragedy has revived the debate on the control of adventure activities in Brazil and on the need to strengthen controls to prevent human errors from having irreversible consequences.
While family and friends say goodbye to María Eduarda, the investigation seeks to answer the question that shocks the country today: how was it possible that an activity designed to offer adrenaline ended up becoming a tragedy.
