Two dead and several wounded during shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island
The school sent an emergency message warning about a person near the campus carrying a weapon
The Providence Police Department reported the deaths of two people and injuries to eight others during a shooting at Brown University, who had alerted authorities about a person near the campus with a weapon shortly before.
“Multiple shots fired in the Brown University area. This is an active investigation. Please shelter in place or avoid the area until “New notice,” police reported.
Eight injured in hospital
“This is a profoundly tragic day for Brown, our families, and our local community. There are truly no words to express the deep sorrow we feel for the victims of today’s shooting,” they said in a statement.
The school confirmed that the attacker is at large. “While DPS was informed at one point that a person was in custody, after questioning it was determined that this person was not the suspect in the shooting. Therefore, we urge all members of our community to remain vigilant.”
Around 4:00 p.m. (local time), the university sent out a message alerting that a person with a weapon was on campus in Providence on Saturday afternoon. Authorities arrived at the scene and advised residents to stay indoors.
This Saturday, December 13, the university requested assistance from authorities after spotting a person loitering near the campus at 184 Hope St.
“Lock your doors, silence your phones”
“Urgent: There is an active shooting near Barus and Holley. Brown and Providence police are on scene. Continue to shelter in place at this time. One suspect is in custody,” the school wrote in a message on its website.
“Lock your doors,Silence your phones and remain hidden until further notice. Remember: Run if you are in the affected area and evacuate safely if you can; hide if evacuation is not possible and take cover. Fight as a last resort and take steps to protect yourself. Stay tuned for more safety updates,” the institution added.
“Heavy Police Presence”
The Providence Police Department responded to the 911 call and went to the scene to assess the situation.
“There is currently a heavy police and Providence fire presence on Hope Street near Brown University. Please be careful and avoid this area until further notice,” the department wrote on X.
