Four MLAs from Meghalaya join BJP, TMC also got a jolt before the elections

Two MLAs of NPP and one of Trinamool Congress have joined BJP in Meghalaya. Apart from this, an independent MLA has also joined BJP.

The Trinamool Congress and the NPP have suffered a major setback ahead of the elections in Meghalaya. In fact, a total of three MLAs from both the parties joined the BJP. Apart from this, an independent MLA has also joined BJP. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave party membership to all four. The MLAs who have joined the BJP include Benedict Marak and Fairleen Sangma of NPP and Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang of TMC. Apart from this, Independent MLA Samuel Sangma has also taken membership of the party. Let us tell you that on November 28 itself, the three MLAs met the Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh at the State Secretariat and handed over their resignations. BJP is the ally in the shared government

Meghalaya has the government of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA). The alliance has a total of 48 MLAs, including 23 from the NPP, in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly. The BJP, with two of its MLAs, is an ally of the National People's Party-led coalition government in the state. BJP's relations with NPP have been sour for a few days. 

Five Congress MLAs had joined the coalition in February 

Earlier this year in February, all five Congress MLAs of Meghalaya had joined the BJP coalition government. While last year, 12 MLAs including former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma left Congress and joined Trinamool Congress. After this, the number of Congress MLAs in the Meghalaya Assembly was reduced to five, while initially the opposition party had 17 members in the house. The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) formally gave a letter of support to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. It was said that the five Congress MLAs have decided to join the MDA government on February 8, 2022.
