Om Prakash Chautala: In the disproportionate assets case, OP Chautala sentenced to 4 years
A sum of Rs 50 lakhs fine imposed on OP Chautala.
A Delhi court has sentenced former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala to four years in jail in a disproportionate assets case. The court has also directed to seize four properties while imposing a fine of 50 lakhs. Let us inform that according to the letter filed in the court, OP Chautala is responsible for collecting assets worth Rs 6.09 crore between 1993 and 2006. In May 2019, the Enforcement Directorate had attached assets worth over Rs 3.6 crore. Chautala was also convicted in the JBT scam in January 2013.
OP Chautala cited age
Chautala has urged the court to give minimum punishment citing medical illness and age. It was told on his behalf that he is 90 percent disabled and his health is not good. Urging the court, he said that his behavior has been good during his stay in jail in the past as well. He passed the 10th and 12th examinations while in jail. In such a situation, keeping all the facts in mind, it was said to give concession in punishment.
The court should give strict punishment to OP Chautala
The CBI opposed the reference given by OP Chautala. CBI said in the court that OP Chautala has been the Chief Minister of a state. In such a situation, giving them concessions will send a wrong message to the public. At the same time, the CBI said that corruption is a serious crime and strict punishment should be given as per law to reduce corruption in the country. The court should not exercise any leniency in this matter.
OP Chautala punished in these cases
The CBI, in its charge sheet filed on March 26, 2010, had alleged that Chautala had amassed assets disproportionate to his lawful income between 1993 and 2006. According to the FIR registered by the CBI, Chautala acquired movable and immovable assets disproportionate to his known source of income by connivance with family and others from July 24, 1999 to March 5, 2005, as the Chief Minister of Haryana. This property was acquired in the name of Chautala and his family members. According to the CBI, Chautala amassed assets of more than Rs 6.09 crore, which was 189.11 percent more than his known source of income.
