The Supreme Court ordered the release of all the six convicts in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi . Nalini Sriharan, who has been serving life sentence for three decades, walked out of Vellore jail on Saturday after getting the release order. It is known that apart from Nalini, the five others who have been ordered to be released by the SC include RP Ravichandran, Nalini's husband V Sriharan alias Murugan, Santhan, Robert Payas and Jayakumar. Sriharan, Santhan, Robert and Jayakumar are Sri Lankan citizens.
The convicts were released after the conduct in the jail was found satisfactory
A bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice BV Nagaratna noted that the Tamil Nadu government had recommended commutation of sentence for all the convicts, on which the governor had not acted. The court also took note that the conduct of the convicts during their stay in jail was satisfactory.
Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu in 1991
The former Prime Minister of the country, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on 21 May 1991 by a female suicide bomber at an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Rajiv Gandhi, nine police personnel and 16 others were killed in the suicide blast. Also, 45 other people were injured.
After the release, Nalini's mother said, the feelings of happiness cannot be expressed in words.
Nalini declined to comment on her release citing parole, but her mother S Padma said, "The feeling of happiness cannot be expressed in words." There is no place for this happiness, but there is nothing but the feeling of infinite bliss.
