Measles outbreak paralyzes ICE detention center in Dilley, Texas, where Liam Conejo was held
Measles outbreak at ICE detention center in Dilley, Texas, prompts quarantine; Liam Conejo was detained there before being released
The United States government confirmed on Sunday a measles outbreak at the Dilley Immigrant Processing Center in Texas, the same facility where the child Liam Conejo was detained Ramos, five years old, and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, before being released by court order. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Texas Department of State Health Services detected two active cases of measles among people in immigration custody. Authorities reported that the patients are receiving medical attention and that quarantine and isolation protocols have been activated for those who had direct contact with the infected individuals.
Containing the spread of measles cases
DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin explained that the measures aim to contain the spread of the virus within the facility, although it was not specified whether the cases involve minors or adults.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that can cause serious complications, especially in children and people with weakened immune systems.
Operations suspended at detention center
Following confirmation of the outbreak, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ordered the immediate suspension of transfers and operations at the Dilley facility, located about 62 miles from San Antonio.
The facility, primarily intended for migrant families, halted operations while authorities monitor the situation.
The child was detained Liam Conejo
The center had been the focus of national attention in recent days following the detention of Liam Conejo Ramos and his father during an immigration operation in Minneapolis. Both were transferred to Dilley and released Saturday night after a federal judge ordered their release from the center. Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro confirmed that he accompanied the family on their return to Minnesota.
In 2025, the country recorded the highest number of measles cases in more than 30 years,With more than 2,200 confirmed cases in at least 44 states, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), amid a sustained decline in vaccination rates. At the same time, the population in immigration custody has increased significantly. ICE currently holds more than 70,000 immigrants detained nationwide as part of the immigration offensive launched by the Donald Trump administration, which has raised concerns among human rights advocates about the unsanitary conditions and overcrowding in detention centers. Federal authorities assured that medical personnel continue to maintain constant vigilance at Dilley and that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent further infections, while the facility remains closed to all arrivals and departures until further notice.
