Man finds package wrapped in canvas on Florida beach and causes a stir in networks: it contained alleged narcotics
A viral video on a Florida beach sparked a wave of speculation after a man pulled a tarp-wrapped package out of the ocean.
A man was captured on video removing a mysterious tarp-wrapped package from the water that washed up on the shore of Fort Lauderdale Beach, Florida, on May 18.
The images quickly went viral on TikTok and other platforms, where numerous users began to speculate that the man had found millions of dollars hidden inside the package.
The object, several feet tall, drew attention especially when the video briefly showed its interior: several neatly arranged rectangular packages, similar to bricks.
Police believe it was narcotics.
However, authorities dismissed theories about cash.
Fort Lauderdale Police indicated that the contents of the package were suspected of being narcotics.
“The object was allegedly narcotics,” the authorities said in statements offered to Daily Mail.
According to police, the package washed ashore around 11:00 a.m.
So far, no arrests have been made nor suspects identified in connection with the discovery.
Authorities have also not determined how the package ended up in the ocean or who might have owned it.
Social networks reacted with jokes and theories
The case generated thousands of comments on social media, where some users suggested that the package contained “square groupers,” a colloquial term used in Florida to refer to shipments of marijuana wrapped and thrown into the sea.
Other users joked that they would not have reported the discovery to the authorities.
“Maybe I'm old school, but whoever finds it keeps it,” one user wrote.
Some even speculated that the package could be related to criminal organizations or drug money.
Authorities recalled that Florida law requires reporting lost or abandoned property. Failure to do so could result in charges related to theft or misappropriation.
The case remains under investigation while authorities try to determine the origin of the package found on the beach.
