The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reviewing seven peptides that have gained notoriety for their perceived health benefits, including weight loss and muscle development. Although they are not officially approved, they are widely available in clinics and online.

This FDA review is clearly influenced by the opinion of senior health authorities and wellness influencers through information and social media platforms.

The FDA's Pharmacy Drug Preparation Advisory Committee meets this July 23 and 24 to discuss the possible inclusion of these substances on the 503A Bulk Substances List. The decision may facilitate its use in prescribed medications.

Third party pressure

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. supports access to these peptides, unlike FDA reviewers who express concerns about the lack of solid evidence about their effectiveness and safety.

Fellow peptide advocates include podcaster Joe Rogan and influential wellness figures like Gary Brecka, a supporter of Kennedy's “Make America Healthy Again” initiative, who sells vials of peptides online. It is noteworthy that social networks are full of testimonies from people who claim that these substances helped them build muscle, recover from injuries or look younger, notes the Associated Press (AP).

While experts such as Dr. Alex Tatem, sports medicine and peptide specialist, board-certified urologist and member of Rugiet's Medical Advisory Board, interviewed by Fox News Digital, highlight the importance of rigorous clinical studies before any approval.

“BPC-157 or TB-500 are compounds that can help facilitate healing after an injury, and according to multiple studies, they are incredibly safe when administered, which is interesting when compared to the over-the-counter options we currently use for aches and pains, such as ibuprofen,” Tatem notes.

This reference is made because ibuprofen, although it can be purchased without a prescription, the FDA warns that it can cause serious side effects, such as stomach bleeding, kidney damage and cardiovascular complications, especially when used in high doses or for prolonged periods.

Likewise, Dr. Marc Siegel, senior medical analyst for Fox News, warns that these substances “need careful study.” He notes that he is concerned about the impact that some of these peptides may have on the kidneys. "I would like to see rigorous clinical trials before approval. I'm not convinced the data is enough yet," he said.

The 7 popular peptides, regularly promoted for weight loss, healing and longevity, are:

BPC-157. Proposed use: ulcerative colitis. Proposed forms of administration: oral capsules, nasal spray, injections, transdermal cream, rectal suppository.

TB-500. Proposed use: wound healing. Proposed forms: subcutaneous or intramuscular injection.

KPV. Proposed use: healing of wounds and inflammatory conditions. Proposed forms: Cream and gel.

MOTS-c. Proposed use: obesity and osteoporosis. Proposed forms: subcutaneous injection.

Semax. Proposed uses: cerebral ischemia (lack of blood flow and oxygen to the brain), migraine and trigeminal neuralgia (chronic pain in the face). Proposed forms: intranasal spray, subcutaneous injection.

Emideltide. Proposed uses: opioid withdrawal, chronic insomnia, narcolepsy. Proposed form: subcutaneous injection.

Epitalon. Proposed use: insomnia. Proposed form: subcutaneous injection.

The expectation is that the hearings will generate an intensive debate. If the committee recommends inclusion, the FDA must complete its review process before making any decision.
