Open microphone captures Trump saying that thanks to him, Putin wants an agreement on Ukraine
The US president was heard saying that President Vladimir Putin wants to reach a resolution to the war for him
The open microphone revealed a conversation between Donald Trump speaking with the French president, Emmanuel Macron, assuring that Putin is going to make the deal for me, as crazy as it sounds, you understand?
Before the multilateral meeting, the US president was heard saying into a microphone he thought was muted that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to reach a resolution to the war for him.
Trump made the comment to Macron just before the start of a meeting that included the two along with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders.
Trump is also heard talking about arranging a trilateral meeting between Putin and the Ukrainian president, something Trump has publicly said he believes will happen.
For its part, CNN reported that Trump He then paused the multilateral meeting to speak by phone with Putin and inform him of what had been discussed in Washington today.
Trump insisted today that Putin had already assured him during their meeting last week in Alaska that Russia “would accept security guarantees for Ukraine” and today he stressed that a large part of the burden of this contingent that would be deployed on Ukrainian soil to prevent further Russian invasions would fall on European partners.
Both Trump and Zelensky today expressed their openness to the idea that they would meet soon in a trilateral meeting with Putin to try to negotiate a peace agreement.
The US president also insisted that today it was necessary to discuss the “exchange of territories,” a proposal put forward by Russian President Vladimir Putin and that would mean Ukraine would have to cede sovereignty over regions like Donetsk and Lugansk to Russia.
However, kyiv has said that it considers this possible exchange intolerable and that it is also technically unconstitutional according to the Ukrainian Constitution.
