President of the University of Virginia resigns due to pressure from the Trump administration
The Department of Justice had demanded that James E. Ryan resign to help resolve a civil rights investigation
University of Virginia President James Ryan told the school's board of trustees that he will resign, a decision that comes after pressure from the Trump administration and Department of Justice officials who have demanded it in order to conduct an investigation into the institution's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
This The extraordinary move comes as the Trump administration has launched investigations into universities across a wide range of issues, including antisemitism and diversity efforts. This included an investigation into the University of Virginia over alleged racial bias in its admissions and its failure to fully eliminate DEI from the institution. The New York Times (NYT) reports that the administration issued an ultimatum to the university Thursday night: only if the president resigned would it reach a negotiated agreement to meet the demands of the administration, which has made DEI and antisemitism policies two mainstays of its fight with the nation's universities. The NYT describes Ryan, in office since 2018, as a president who has distinguished himself precisely for his inclusive policies, for promoting diversity among the student body, for encouraging the entry of students from families without a college background, and for encouraging students to get involved in community work.
For the Trump administration, DEI policies amount to discrimination: “The Department of Justice has a zero-tolerance policy for unlawful discrimination at publicly funded colleges and universities, and we have made this clear at some of the nation’s most prominent institutions of higher education, including the University of Virginia,” the Justice Department acknowledged in a statement, without citing Ryan.
