In a press conference held this week, Senate leaders assured that reducing these expenses will be a legislative priority if they regain the majority in the 2026 midterm elections.

The announcement was led by Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, along with Senators Patty Murray and Elizabeth Warren, who presented a report documenting the sustained increase in childcare costs and accusing the Republican administration of having made the situation worse for millions of American families.

According to the report, the national average cost of child care reached $13,184 annually in 2025, an increase of 5% compared to the previous year. Additionally, it is estimated that 4.2 million children do not have access to formal child care in their communities.

The impact on families and the Latino community

Democratic legislators maintain that the problem especially affects working families and the Latino community. The report highlights that approximately 25% of workers in the sector are Hispanic and that one in five is an immigrant.

It also warns that recent immigration policies have generated concern among providers and families. Democrats accuse the Trump administration of promoting allegations of fraud against child care centers without sufficient evidence, a narrative that they say has led to increased surveillance and immigration operations near some child care centers.

“We can't solve America's affordability crisis without solving the child care crisis,” said Elizabeth Warren.

A political flag heading to the elections

The document is part of a broader strategy with which Democrats seek to focus on the cost of living, housing, health and energy in the face of the legislative elections.

“Our caucus will make reducing child care costs and providing a universal child care system a top priority when we regain the majority,” said Chuck Schumer.

For her part, Patty Murray criticized recent statements by Trump about the impossibility of expanding federal support for child care.

“This is a priority for families, so Democrats will make it a priority for Congress,” said the senator.

Although there is consensus among Democrats and Republicans that the cost of child care represents a growing problem, both parties remain divided on solutions. While Democrats promote greater federal investments and a universal system, Republicans have opted for tax incentives and more targeted programs.
