This Wednesday, the Federal Reserve (Fed) had its first meeting under new management, which caused different reactions in the market. Speaking specifically of the dollar, the central bank's decision boosted its value and for this Thursday, June 18, its price against the peso had a strong rebound that could benefit you if you send remittances to Mexico.
The average price of the dollar in Mexico today is $17.26 pesos per unit. During the previous session, the Mexican currency registered a depreciation of 0.91% against the greenback, in a context of greater strength for the US currency internationally.
According to information from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), the official closing of the dollar corresponding to Wednesday, June 17, was $17.3345 pesos per unit. However, due to the continuous operation of the exchange market, the exchange rate ended around $17.30 pesos per dollar at the end of the day.
According to data from Dow Jones, at the opening this Thursday the US currency was quoted on average at $17.37 Mexican pesos, which represents an increase of 0.35% compared to the previous closing.
In weekly terms, the dollar accumulates an advance of 0.84% against the Mexican peso. However, compared to the same period in 2025, the US currency registers a drop of 7.54%. On the other hand, the volatility of the exchange rate is located at 4.72%, below the reference of 7.55%, reflecting relatively stable conditions in the market.
Banxico also reported that the FIX exchange rate published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) for this Thursday was established at $17.1892 pesos per dollar. Likewise, the exchange rate for the payment of obligations denominated in foreign currency was set at $17.2023 pesos per unit.
Dollar exchange rate today in Mexican banks
The purchase and sale quotes in the main banks in Mexico for this Thursday, June 18, are as follows:
Among the institutions analyzed, BBVA México maintains one of the lowest sales prices, while Banamex stands out for offering the best purchase price.
In banks in Mexico and the northern border, the dollar is sold on average for $17.60 pesos and purchased for $16.46 pesos. For their part, the exchange houses in Tamaulipas handle quotes close to $17.50 pesos for sale and $16.50 pesos for purchase. And in Tijuana, the dollar is around $17.39 pesos for sale.
Meanwhile, as far as international money transfer companies are concerned, the dollar is quoted today at $16.83 pesos in Western Union, while in MoneyGram the exchange rate is $17.60 per unit.
The Fed maintains rates and oil falls
The markets' attention was focused on the decision of the Federal Reserve (Fed), which chose to keep interest rates unchanged in a range of between 3.50% and 3.75%.
“I am pleased to report that the members of the FOMC are clear and unanimous: this committee will ensure price stability,” said Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh, during what marks his first announcement as the central bank's top leader. “The recent past does not have to be a harbinger of things to come.”
During his first conference after taking office, Warsh also announced the creation of working groups focused on issues such as inflation, employment, productivity and institutional communication.
Meanwhile, international oil prices fell more than 1% after reports of a provisional agreement between the United States and Iran that improved expectations for global crude oil supply. A barrel of Brent was at $78.53 dollars and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) at $75.31 dollars.
