Federal Judge Denise Casper on Wednesday permanently banned the electoral changes promoted by Donald Trump's government, thus blocking new requirements to register to vote throughout the country.

The ruling annuls the order that required citizens to present documentary evidence of their nationality. As the judge determined, President Trump does not have the constitutional authority to regulate these types of electoral processes.

Denise Casper agreed that the Constitution grants the states and Congress the authority to regulate elections, and that the Constitution itself “does not grant the president any specific power over elections,” notes the AP agency.

The court decision also protects voting by mail. Trump's regulations were intended to discard any ballot that arrived after Election Day, but the ruling ensures the validity of all ballots as long as they are postmarked by the deadline.

In addition, the measure that allowed the Executive to financially punish rebellious regions was stopped, so the government will not be able to withdraw federal funds from states that decide to reject these regulations.

This resolution ends a year of legal battles over attempts at electoral reform. In this way, the current system remains intact, preserving the control and sovereignty of the states over their own voting processes.
