Zohran Mamdani is the big winner of the primary elections in New York, what happened in other races?
The three candidates supported by the mayor of New York won the primary elections in the state, seeking a turn in the Democratic Party
The New York primary elections became a battle between different political projects of the Democratic Party, leaving the city's mayor Zohran Mamdani as the clear winner, whose three candidates he openly supported won their respective races, even facing the prestigious president of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), Adriano Espaillat.
In District 13, activist Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated veteran Espaillat, one of the most significant setbacks of the night for the Democratic establishment.
Although an upset occurred in District 10, where former City Comptroller Brad Lander defeated incumbent Congressman Dan Goldman. Lander had the support of Mamdani, as well as national progressive figures, in a campaign that reflected the ideological divisions within the party, especially on issues related to Israel, since while Lander addressed the need for the US to change its relationship with that country – due to its actions in Gaza –, Goldman defended practically unconditional support for Israel.
In District 7, state Assemblywoman Claire Valdez prevailed over Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in the race to succeed outgoing Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, who had supported Reynoso.
Another closely watched race was District 12, opened by the retirement of Congressman Jerry Nadler. There, Micah Lasher defeated a field of challengers that included Jack Schlossberg, Alex Bores and attorney George Conway.
President Donald Trump had a limited participation in the New York primaries. His most relevant endorsement was for Republican businessman Anthony Constantino, who won the Republican nomination in District 21, considered a conservative bastion in the north of the state. Trump also publicly celebrated the defeats of Goldman and Conway.
“Weak, pathetic Congressman Dan Goldman just lost, by a lot!” Trump wrote in Truth Social. “I guess people didn't like that he illegally attacked President TRUMP.”
Outside of congressional races, voters participated in primaries for state Senate, state Assembly, comptroller, and other local offices. The gubernatorial nominations saw little competition, with Governor Kathy Hochul and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman advancing without significant opposition into the November general election.
The results consolidate Mamdani as one of the most influential figures in New York Democratic politics with national impact and anticipate an intense battle between progressives and moderates ahead of the November legislative elections.
The election in Maryland
The most watched electoral contest in Maryland was House District 5, opened by the retirement of veteran congressman Steny Hoyer. State Delegate Adrian Boafo won the Democratic nomination in a 24-candidate race and advanced to the general election. Boafo, a former Hoyer collaborator, had the support of the outgoing congressman himself and Governor Wes Moore.
Another notable race was District 6, where Democratic Rep. April McClain Delaney defeated former Congressman David Trone in one of the most expensive campaigns of the election cycle, marked by millions of dollars in spending by candidates and outside groups.
In the gubernatorial race, Democratic Gov. Wes Moore comfortably won the nomination to seek a second term. On the Republican side, former state delegate Dan Cox won the primary and will face Moore again in November. Cox is considered one of President Trump's closest allies in Maryland and received his political endorsement during his rise within the Republican Party.
In addition to the governorship and Congress, voters participated in primaries for attorney general, state legislature, county executives and other local offices that will help shape Maryland's political landscape for years to come.
Voting in Utah
Utah's primary elections confirmed Republican dominance, although the ground was set for one of the most competitive races of November, due to a new congressional map that created a favorable district for Democrats in the Salt Lake City area.
The top federal race was the District 1 Democratic primary, where former congressman and former Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams won the nomination by defeating three challengers, including state Sen. Nate Blouin. McAdams will seek to return to the House of Representatives in a redrawn district that offers Democrats a real chance to win back a federal seat in Utah.
On the Republican side, Reps. Blake Moore and Celeste Maloy handily defeated their challengers in the 2nd and 3rd districts, respectively. Moore bested state legislator Karianne Lisonbee, while Maloy defeated former state Rep. Phil Lyman, a figure associated with the party's most conservative wing.
President Trump endorsed the three sitting Republican congressmen seeking the nomination this year: Moore, Maloy and Mike Kennedy, who advanced unopposed in District 4.
In addition to elections for the House of Representatives, voters participated in primaries for the state Senate, the Utah House of Representatives and various local offices. The results will be closely watched because they could redefine the political balance in the state Capitol and determine whether Democrats manage to break the stranglehold that Republicans have maintained on Utah's congressional delegation since 2021.
And in South Carolina?
The primary runoff elections in South Carolina cemented President Trump's influence within the Republican Party. Alan Wilson won the race against Pamela Evette.
For District 01, Charleston County Councilwoman Jenny Costa Honeycutt beat state Rep. Mark Smith in a runoff race to succeed Republican Rep. Nancy Mace, who opted not to run for re-election to try, unsuccessfully, to win the governorship.
Costa Honeycutt will face Democrat Nancy Lacore, who won the primary race, in November.
In addition to the governorship and Congress, voters defined candidacies for the state Legislature and various local offices, results that will help shape the political landscape of one of the most conservative states in the country.
