The ACLU will allocate $50 million to protect the vote during the midterm elections
The ACLU intends to launch an ambitious strategy aimed at protecting the vote during the midterm elections to be held in November
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced its intention to ensure that the vote is respected during the midterm elections through a strategy to which it will allocate $50 million dollars.
The nonpartisan, nonprofit organization has begun deploying thousands of employees in states such as Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, where it believes it is necessary to address possible electoral interference and disenfranchisement, a situation that could affect the results of the midterm elections.
The strategy adopted by the ACLU arises in response to President Donald Trump's plan aimed at federalizing elections and in response to the call made to legislators to approve the SAVE America Act, through which they intend to reform voting requirements.
The focus of such legislation is to require people to present proof of citizenship as well as photo identification to be eligible to vote.
In addition, limitations will be imposed on voting by mail due to the consideration that it currently faces the risk of being manipulated.
To this must be added that a group of legislators fears that, if the government orders the deployment of immigration agents at voting centers, simply because they know that there is the option that they could deport someone, that will become a deterrent factor for voters nationwide.
Faced with this situation, Deirdre Schifeling, political and advocacy director of the ACLU, released a statement reiterating the organization's commitment to ensuring that the will of the people continues to prevail.
"Our right to vote is facing a coordinated attack on multiple fronts. But in a democracy, the people elect their politicians, not the other way around.
When voting access is restricted and election results are not respected, the very foundations of our democracy hang in the balance. That is why the ACLU is launching the largest election protection program in our century-old history,” the letter states.
