Peru holds elections to elect its new president
More than 27 million Peruvians are called to the polls to choose between Keiki Fujimori and Roberto Sánchez
The opening of polls in Peru, which officially begins the presidential voting process, began shortly after 07:00 in the morning, local time, and will conclude ten hours later to receive some 27 million voters who will elect president between the right-wing Keiko Fujimori and the left-wing Roberto Sánchez, for a five-year term.
This election will determine who will be the ninth president of Peru in the last ten years, after a decade of political instability due to a succession of presidential dismissals promoted by Parliament.
Delay in the delivery of electoral material
As in the last election, the lack of electoral material to carry out the second round vote was reported again in some tables at the beginning of the day, despite the fact that minutes before the president of the National Election Jury (JNE), Roberto Burneo, had stated that the material was ready in all places.
Half an hour after the start of voting hours this Sunday, there were still tables whose members indicated that they did not have the necessary elements to be able to receive voters, although apparently in a smaller number compared to the first round on April 12, when this situation occurred on a larger scale in Lima.
In some polling stations, the lists of voters and voting ballots arrived minutes before the start of voting day, which delayed the installation of the tables even though their members were ready at the agreed time, according to electoral officials told national media.
