Trump mourns the death of Senator Lindsey Graham and says he was “a true patriot”
Trump had supported Lindsey Graham's reelection campaign for the November midterm elections in which a third of the Senate will be renewed
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, mourned this Sunday the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, whom he defined as “a true American Patriot.”
"Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the best people and senators I have ever known, has passed away! He was always working and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!!," the president wrote on his social network, Truth Social, after learning the news of the Republican's death.
The office of the former senator from South Carolina confirmed his death today after suffering "a brief and sudden illness."
"On the night of Saturday, July 11, US Senator Lindsey Graham passed away after a brief and sudden illness. Senator Graham's family appreciates your prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period," the American's office detailed on the social network X.
Just a few weeks ago, Trump had endorsed Graham's reelection campaign for the November midterm elections, in which the entire House of Representatives and a third of the Senate will be renewed, which may alter the balance of power in Washington.
The senator was serving his fourth consecutive six-year term in the Senate and was one of the toughest-on-Iran and most pro-Israel Republican voices.
Various Israeli officials, such as the president, Isaac Herzog, and the Minister of Defense, Israel Katz, also mourned the death of Graham, who just two days ago was visiting kyiv to hold a meeting with the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. EFE
