Saints Take Precautions After Hathras Satsang Stampede
Following the tragic stampede at Hathras Satsang, leading storytellers and saints in India take precautionary measures to prevent future incidents.
In the wake of the tragic stampede at Hathras Satsang that claimed 121 lives, other leading storytellers and saints across India have implemented precautionary measures to prevent similar incidents. The stampede, which occurred on Tuesday during a gathering at Narayan Sakar Hari alias Bhole Baba's Satsang, is believed to have resulted from an unexpectedly large crowd and insufficient crowd management by the administration and organizers.
Lessons Learned from the Incident
The incident has served as a wake-up call for many spiritual leaders. Premanand Maharaj of Vrindavan (Mathura) has decided to halt his night parikrama, urging his followers not to gather on the streets for his nighttime darshan. Previously, Premanand Maharaj’s nighttime padayatra was a popular event, often shared widely on social media. Similarly, Dhirendra Krishna Shastri of Bageshwar Dham has requested his devotees to refrain from visiting the ashram on his birthday to avoid overcrowding.
Premanand Maharaj’s Precautionary Measures
Premanand Maharaj has issued a letter through Shri Hit Radha Keli Kunj Parikar, appealing to the devotees to avoid gathering for his darshan. The letter states, “We pray at the feet of Thakurji that no such incident should happen in the future. Taking precaution in the context of the above incident, Pujya Maharaj Ji, who used to go to Shri Hit Radha Keli Kunj at 2:15 pm while doing padayatra, where all the devotees used to get darshan, it is closed indefinitely.” This step is seen as a necessary measure to ensure the safety of his followers.
Dhirendra Krishna Shastri’s Appeal
Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, known for his following at Bageshwar Dham, has also taken steps to manage the crowd. In a video released by Bageshwar Dham Ashram, he is seen appealing to his followers to stay at home on his birthday, July 4. He said, “Preparations for a wonderful celebration are going on in a very elaborate manner, but we want to request and pray that you celebrate my birth by staying at your homes.” He also encouraged his followers to read Hanuman Chalisa and plant trees as a way to celebrate.
Increased Awareness and Safety Measures
The tragic incident at Hathras has heightened awareness about the importance of crowd management during large gatherings. Spiritual leaders are now more vigilant, understanding the risks associated with large, unmanaged crowds. The steps taken by Premanand Maharaj and Dhirendra Krishna Shastri reflect a broader movement towards ensuring the safety and well-being of their devotees.
While the exact cause of the Hathras stampede is still under investigation, initial reports suggest that overcrowding and inadequate crowd control were significant factors. As a result, other spiritual leaders are expected to follow suit, implementing stricter measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
A Call for Responsible Conduct
The spiritual leaders’ appeals emphasize responsible conduct among followers and the need for improved infrastructure and planning for large events. This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers associated with mass gatherings and the critical need for thorough preparation and vigilance.
As India mourns the loss of those who perished in the Hathras stampede, the steps taken by Premanand Maharaj, Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, and others mark a significant shift towards ensuring such incidents are not repeated. The spiritual community’s proactive measures demonstrate a commitment to the safety and well-being of their followers.
