Tom Cruise shares first preview of Digger, film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu
The American actor leaves behind his classic role as an action hero to enter a dystopia that promises to transform his career.
Alejandro González Iñárritu's return to cinemas is getting closer, and he will do so with one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.
This Tuesday, Tom Cruise shared the first preview of “Digger”, the Mexican director's new film project that promises not to leave anyone indifferent.
Completely moving away from the extreme stunts and adrenaline that have characterized his recent career, Cruise presents himself in a radically different and practically unrecognizable facet, in a role with which he points directly towards an Academy statuette.
The Warner Bros. production, described as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” marks Iñárritu's return to film direction for the first time since 2022.
In this first trailer a transformed Tom Cruise is revealed. Dressed in the clothes of a sheriff, the actor has an aged appearance, characterized by marked wrinkles and completely gray hair.
The plot of “Digger”, whose commercial premiere is scheduled for October 2, immerses the viewer in a universe of dystopian and futuristic overtones.
According to the official synopsis revealed by the production company, the story follows the most powerful man in the world, who, after causing a global disaster, embarks on a desperate mission to prove that he is the savior of humanity.
The first images suggest an acid satire with parallels to the current political and social panorama, including peculiar settings such as a court where an enigmatic character with horns on his head appears.
For Tom Cruise, this feature film represents a golden opportunity in his search for definitive acting recognition. Despite having received an Honorary Oscar in 2025 in recognition of his career and vision within the film industry, the actor has never managed to win the golden statuette, adding three nominations as a performer and one as a producer throughout his career.
Under the direction of Iñárritu, responsible for widely awarded hits such as “Birdman” and “The Revenant,” Cruise seeks to repay that historical debt with film criticism.
