DeAaron Fox assures his future in San Antonio with a million-dollar extension
The Spurs star signed a 4-year, $229 million contract after showing his quality despite injuries
De'Aaron Fox will continue to wear the San Antonio Spurs uniform for the next few years. The point guard reached an agreement with the Texas franchise to extend his contract for four seasons in exchange for $229 million dollars, as confirmed this Monday by Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul to ESPN.
The move guarantees Fox's permanence in San Antonio until the 2029-30 season, with no player option in the final year, which demonstrates the team's total confidence in the 27-year-old's talent.
Fox landed in the Spurs in February from the Sacramento Kings, as part of a trade that sought to reinforce the team's young core led by French phenomenon Victor Wembanyama. Fox himself had chosen San Antonio as his preferred destination, a choice that, in addition to being sporting, also has tax advantages by avoiding state income tax in Texas, something that does not occur in California.
A proven talent, slowed by injuries
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding Fox's arrival, his first stint with the Spurs was brief: he was only able to play 17 games with the franchise due to an injury to his left pinky tendon, for which he underwent surgery in March. During that short period, he averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists, showing a quick adaptation to the new system of play.
In total, including his time with the Kings, Fox played in 62 games last season, with outstanding averages of 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds. One of his brightest moments came on November 15, when he scored 60 points against the Timberwolves, setting a franchise record in Sacramento. Only Nikola Jokic achieved a similar performance that season.
Fox's projection continues to rise. He's one of the few players to have maintained averages of at least 20 points, 5 assists, and 1 steal per game over the past six seasons. Furthermore, since his arrival in the league in 2017-18, only three other players—James Harden, Russell Westbrook, and Jokic—have surpassed the 10,000-point mark.000 assists and 700 steals.
With Fox fully committed and physically recovered, the Spurs are banking on a promising future. Along with Wembanyama, the reigning Rookie of the Year, and Stephon Castle, who won the same award last season, they are expected to form a solid foundation that will return San Antonio to the NBA's elite.
