The tragic death of a young Brazilian woman after instructors threw her off a bridge without tying her to a rope
Three men were arrested after they failed to tie Maria Eduarda Rodrigues to the safety rope before helping her jump from a bridge
A 21-year-old girl died in a tragic extreme sports accident in Brazil.
Three men were arrested following the accident, in which instructors failed to tie the safety rope before helping her jump from a bridge in São Paulo state.
Over the weekend, images went viral of Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas being led to the edge of the abandoned bridge before being thrown into the void on Saturday.
Rodrigues fell 40 meters and emergency services certified his death at the scene of the fall.
The police are investigating whether the men are responsible for homicide with eventual intent (when someone does not have the direct intention to kill, but assumes the risk of doing so), according to local media Globo.
“Unsustainable and unacceptable omission”
The incident occurred on the Ponte do Esqueleto (Skeleton Bridge), on the border between Limeira and Cordeirópolis, in the interior of São Paulo.
In the images published on social networks, two men are seen holding Rodrigues de Freitas by the arms, while a third holds her feet from behind.
When she is thrown from the bridge, a witness shouts at the instructors to put the rope on her.
The three men were wearing harnesses that appeared to be connected to a safety rope.
Rodrigues de Freitas was buried the next day.
Rope-jumping is an extreme sport different from bungee jumping.
In rope jumping, low-elastic climbing ropes are used, which transform the fall into a horizontal pendulum movement.
In contrast, bungee jumping uses a rubber rope that generates a vertical rebound effect.
The bridge has been abandoned for years and is the responsibility of the federal government.
The Secretariat of Heritage of the Union (SPU) of Brazil declared that it was “available to collaborate with the authorities in the investigations.”
The Limeira Mayor's Office announced that it would sue the federal government for inadequately managing the bridge.
Local authorities said they adopted “administrative measures and demand action from the federal agencies responsible for the area.”
The death of Rodrigues de Freitas “makes the continuation of this omission unsustainable and unacceptable,” they said in a statement.
In addition, the Limeira Mayor's Office indicated that the instructors belonged to a private company that offered rope jumping activities, although some local reports suggest that they were part of informal groups that practice extreme sports on the bridge.
