Oscar Piastri (McLaren) not only won the Spanish Grand Prix this Sunday, but also consolidated his lead in the Formula 1 world championship, extending his lead in the standings. The 24-year-old Australian dominated from pole position to take his seventh win in the category—his fifth of the season—at the Montmeló circuit, beating teammate Lando Norris and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who rounded out the podium.

The race was positive for Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), who finally scored his first points of the year by finishing ninth. George Russell (Mercedes) was fourth, and Nico Hülkenberg (Kick Sauber) surprised everyone with the team's best result of 2024, finishing fifth. Lewis Hamilton, now with Ferrari, crossed the finish line in sixth.

But the day took a dramatic turn for Max Verstappen. The Dutchman, four-time world champion, crossed the line in fifth place but received a 10-second penalty after a controversial move on George Russell.

The penalty relegated him to tenth place and also added three points to his license, leaving him with 11 of his 12 allowed before a suspension.

Verstappen defends himself as pressure mounts

“It was a shame the safety car came out… The only fresh tires we had were the hard ones, and they had no grip. That made everything difficult,” Verstappen explained after the race. He assured that they did the best they could with what they had, but acknowledged that there was no pace to compete with the McLarens.

The most tense incident occurred on the final lap. “Max, can you let Russell past?” asked his engineer Gianpiero Lambiase. “No, I was leading. What the fuck?” the Red Bull driver replied, before ceding his position in obvious annoyance. According to the stewards’ official report, Verstappen slowed down to let Russell pass, but just as he was overtaken, he accelerated and collided with the Briton’s car. The document states: “The collision was undoubtedly caused by the actions of Car 1.” Beyond his statements,The accumulation of penalty points puts Verstappen in a critical situation. One more infraction could see him ruled out of a race, which would be a major blow to his bid to regain the championship. He currently sits third in the standings, 49 points behind Piastri.
