The incident, captured on video and going viral within hours, shows a fan wearing a Mike Trout jersey being punched in the face by a man dressed in black. After falling into his seat, another fan, wearing Dodgers colors, ran up to him and kicked him directly in the head.
According to TMZ Sports and ABC7, a spokesperson for the Anaheim Police Department reported that the fight apparently started over a stolen hat. However, it was not specified who took the cap or how exactly the argument that led to the assault originated.
Charges, consequences and sports context
Authorities confirmed that two men, both 26 years old and residents of Tustin, were arrested. One is facing misdemeanor assault charges, while the other, believed to be the primary attacker, was charged with felony assault. Their identities have not been released.
Police said the victim refused to be taken to a hospital at the time of the altercation. It is unknown whether he subsequently sought medical attention.
On the sports front, the night ended with a 6-5 victory for the Angels, completing a sweep of their rivals and extending the Dodgers' losing streak following the MLB All-Star break. The Los Angeles team has a 10-13 record since then, allowing the Padres to take the lead in the NL West by one game.
