Mexican refereeing will make history with the debut of Katia Itzel García in the Netherlands vs. Tunisia and César Ramos' ninth game in Brazil vs. Scotland
The Mexican whistlers Katia Itzel García and César Ramos will be active on the third day of the 2026 World Cup as they are scheduled to officiate the Tunisia vs. matches. Netherlands, in what will be the World Cup debut of the Mexican referee and the Aztec whistler was scheduled for Brazil vs. Scotland.
The appearance of the Mexican judge represents a vote of confidence in the career of a whistler who was highly questioned for her World Cup appointment, considering in the Liga MX environment that there were other whistlers with greater merit than García, but in the end she was scheduled by the FIFA Referees Commission.
Katia Itzel had very little participation at the local level, but her merits were generated at the international level such as the Concacaf U-17 World Cup, the She Believes Cup, the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
She also became relevant in the 2025 Gold Cup, where she made history as the first woman to perform in a men's match in the Concacaf stellar competition at the level of national teams. Her participation in this event catapulted her to the World Cup event.
Her appointment as central referee for the 2026 World Cup, after her participation had been limited to being fourth official in two previous matches and will now see action in the duel between Tunisians against the Dutch.
César Ramos will make history
César Ramos was appointed for the duel between Scotland vs. Brazil, which will automatically make him the Mexican whistler with the most World Cup performances in history in the second match in which he participates in the current 2026 World Cup, after having taken charge in Iran vs. New Zealand.
For this historic match, Ramos Palazuelos will be accompanied by the Mexican flag bearers Alberto Morín and Marco Bisguerra, in addition to having the Norwegians Espen Eskas as fourth referee and Jan Erik Engan as reserve.
In this third World Cup experience, César Ramos will surpass the record set by his compatriot Armando Archundia, who in two World Cups totaled eight games directed as central judge, a mark already achieved by Sinaloa.
Archundia achieved this record by calling five games in the 2006 World Cup in Germany (being the most that a Mexican has called in one edition) and added three more games in South Africa 2010, reaching eight.
While César Ramos will play in his ninth World Cup match, after in Russia 2018 he was in charge of three matches and in Qatar 2022 in four matches, with which, after adding the two matches in which he was appointed, he will already add in the nine matches.
