George Russell wins the first Grand Prix of the Formula 1 season in Australia
The 2016 season, with its new regulations, had Mercedes as the leading team in the debut
The 2016 Formula 1 season began with a resounding result at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne. Briton George Russell, at the wheel of his Mercedes, took the victory in the first race of the season after starting from pole position and completing a dominant performance that ended with a one-two finish for his team. Italian Andrea "Kimi" Antonelli finished in second place, allowing Mercedes to occupy the top two positions on the podium. Third place went to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who was involved in an intense battle for the lead during the early stages of the race. For Russell, the victory represents the sixth win of his Formula 1 career. It also marks the first time he has led the drivers' championship and the first time since 2021 that Mercedes has started a season with a victory, a feat achieved by Lewis Hamilton at that time. "Great battle at the beginning, very happy to cross the finish line first," Russell said after getting out of the car in the post-race interview. During the first few laps, the situation was different from the final result. Ferrari displayed an explosive start thanks to its launch system, powered by a turbo design that allows for more effective acceleration. Charles Leclerc took advantage of this to take the lead from the start, while Hamilton climbed through the field to third. The Monegasque driver held the lead for 28 laps, engaging in a constant duel with Russell. The two drivers exchanged the lead up to seven times during the first nine laps, making that initial stretch one of the most intense moments of the day. Strategy and endurance determined the outcome in Melbourne. As the laps progressed, race pace and strategic decisions began to tip the scales. Mercedes made better use of the pit stop windows, while Ferrari failed to capitalize on two Virtual Safety Car periods that could have changed the course of the battle for victory. Once the pit stops were complete, Russell opened up a lead that he would never relinquish. Lewis Hamilton finished fourth and confirmed that Ferrari was the only team capable of staying relatively close to the pace set by Mercedes. Lando Norris crossed the finish line in fifth position, while Max Verstappen staged a remarkable comeback from last place on the grid to finish sixth. The race was marked by numerous incidents. Six cars retired: two even before the start of the race and another four during the race itself. Only the top seven finishers managed to complete the race on the same lap as the leader. Among the drivers who finished the race was Sergio “Checo” Perez, who finished 16th at the wheel of the Cadillac in what was the team's first official Formula 1 appearance. Although I finished three laps behind the leader, the Mexican driver managed to bring the car home to the checked flag. “It's good to complete the first race, it's all a matter of time, big steps soon,” Perez responded. After this first race of the championship, Russell leads the drivers' standings with 25 points, followed by Antonelli with 18 and Leclerc with 15. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes is in first place with 43 points, while Ferrari is in second place with 27.
