The Leagues Cup 2026 is not having very pleasant results for Mexican clubs. Many teams have to deal with the level of American clubs and adapt to always playing on the road. Gonzalo Piovi considers that this format is not fair.
Liga MX clubs are forced to compete in hostile territories. The Mexican teams have to go on tour to several cities in the United States to face this championship. The Cruz Azul defender explained that playing as a visitor conditions the approach to the matches.
"I think the big difference is that perhaps in Concacaf you compete in the same way due to the fact that you play as a visitor and at home. I think that is the fair way to be able to see which team each one is on," said the Cruz Azul footballer.
In this edition of the tournament, only four matches will take place in Mexican territory. All of these matches correspond to the first phase of the Leagues Cup.
Gonzalo Piovi detailed the elements that make a team stronger at home. These are the advantages that MLS teams start with in this tournament.
"You always become strong at home, you are used to playing at home. In this case they are going to play on their court, we came from traveling five hours yesterday, playing on a field where we are not used to. So I think that is one of the disadvantages that Mexican teams face when coming to play here. In Concacaf it is much more even due to the fact that you also play on your court," he added.
At LAFC they support the change
Los Angeles FC coach Marc Dos Santos acknowledged that there is an advantage to playing at home. The strategist of the Algerian team proposes greater equity for future editions of the Leagues Cup.
"I think the Leagues Cup must get to a point where it is a 50-50 tournament, with matches in both countries. It is very different to play here than in Mexico. I don't think the Mexican clubs have a huge disadvantage. Of course they can win the Leagues Cup, but, in my opinion, for the competition to be truly fair, there should be many more matches in both countries," said the coach after the match against Chivas.
