This week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a health alert regarding the voluntary recall of Adequan Canine Injection and Adequan im Injection brand medications for dogs and horses after glass particles were found in the injection vials.
According to the health entity's report, the recall affects at least two lots of Adequan Canine Injection, a medication used for joint dysfunction in dogs, and two lots of Adequan im Injection, a treatment for joint dysfunction and lameness in horses. Both drugs are administered intramuscularly; They come in the presentation of slightly yellowish or colorless transparent solutions.
Recently, the manufacturer American Regent, Inc. issued a statement indicating that glass fibers were found in the medications during its routine inspections. “American Regent, Inc. is committed to the safety of patients who depend on its products and is taking this precautionary measure to protect public health,” the company said.
Although so far there have been no reported cases of injuries in animals related to the use of this medication. The company warned that “administration of an intramuscular injectable product containing particles, such as glass fibers, may cause local irritation, swelling, inflammation, pain at the injection site, infection or abscesses.”
In this sense, both the FDA and the manufacturer urge consumers, veterinary hospitals, distributors and retailers to discard the drug or return it to the store where it was purchased for a refund.
