Humberto Suazo didn't take long to find his path after hanging up his boots. Just a month after announcing his retirement as a professional footballer, the former striker was officially presented as the new head coach of San Luis de Quillota, a Chilean second-division club, where he ended his playing career and with which he will now begin a new chapter from the sidelines. The news surprised fans, although there had been talk for weeks about the possibility of "Chupete" remaining with the team. Get 20% off UEFA Champions League broadcasts in Spanish on DAZN. From the club's communications department, Suazo shared his initial thoughts on this challenge. "The most important thing is that I'm not afraid of the challenge; that's the most important thing on my mind. I've faced tougher things, so this is a real motivation for me," he stated. He later added that he knows the team's inner workings well and the squad's potential, especially the young players who have the potential to develop. Suazo emphasized that his experience as a player will be an asset in this new phase. "I've always been a person of character, I know how to lead groups well, so in that respect, it's a significant step forward. I know how players react when they're playing and when they're not; that's something I've learned from experience and the coaches I've had," he explained. He also stated that he will seek a style based on technique and confidence: “Without a doubt, I like players who are good with the ball; I think that will be the foundation.”

Return home and legacy in Mexico

The official confirmation from San Luis came accompanied by an emotional message on social media. "A new story is being written... Welcome back home, dear Humberto! Together to write a new story with the Canary! Let's go San Luis!" the club posted. The announcement included a video showing a transition from his time as a player to his new role as manager. Last season, Suazo had already worked as one of Fernando Guajardo's assistants, who facilitated his appointment after the former coach's departure.

The name “Chupete” also carries special weight outside of Chile, particularly in Mexico.Since arriving in Monterrey in 2007, his stature grew until he became a club legend. There, he scored 121 official goals, becoming Rayados' all-time leading scorer during his time with the club and playing a decisive role in Liga MX and CONCACAF Champions League finals. His performance even led him to play a semester at Real Sociedad, where he scored 6 goals in 17 matches.

His impact with the Chilean National Team also did not go unnoticed. With 21 goals, he ranks among the top ten scorers in La Roja's history. He was also the key figure in the qualifying campaign for the 2010 South Africa World Cup, scoring 10 goals in 18 matches and helping Chile return to the World Cup after 12 years. His role was key for a team led by Marcelo Bielsa that would later begin the most successful period in the history of Chilean football.
