Lisandro Martínez: “The fall of the great is the happiness of the mediocre”
Both Lisandro Martínez and Alexis Mac Allister spoke out after the 1-0 defeat at the hands of Spain in New York
Argentina's defeat against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final continues to generate reactions among the protagonists of the Albiceleste. Two days after the definition in the United States, Alexis Mac Allister and Lisandro Martínez turned to their social networks to send a message to the fans, thank them for the support they received and respond to the criticism and ridicule that appeared after the runner-up finish.
The two footballers agreed to highlight the pride they feel for having represented their country and defended the team's journey during the World Cup, despite not having been able to retain the title won in Qatar 2022.
Mac Allister acknowledged the pain of being so close to the two-time championship, although he insisted that the experience lived during the tournament will remain intact for the group.
"Thank you to all Argentines for every message of love and support. They don't know how important they are on this path. And also thanks to those who, from other countries, send us messages mocking or rejoicing in our pain. Without meaning to, they help us feel more proud every day of being Argentinian," wrote the Liverpool midfielder.
The midfielder also recalled that the team went through difficult moments during the competition and maintained that nothing will erase what the team has achieved throughout the championship.
“We have been so close” to the two-time championship, he noted, before adding: “No one is going to take away from us what we experienced during this World Cup.”
In addition, he dedicated a few words to the fans who accompanied the team both in the United States and during the massive reception that the delegation had in Buenos Aires after losing the final 1-0 against Spain.
"Let's cry, because we are Argentines and we always want to win. But after crying, let's get up, unite and move forward, because this continues," he expressed.
Lisandro Martínez responds to criticism after the final
Defender Lisandro Martínez also published a message in which he focused on the meaning of wearing the Argentine national team shirt and the way the team approached the tournament.
“The result does not define the path taken,” wrote the defender, who assured that representing Argentina “will always be a source of pride.”
Martínez took advantage of his publication to respond to those who celebrated the Argentine defeat or questioned the team's behavior during and after the World Cup.
“Remember that 'the fall of the great is the happiness of the mediocre,'” he said.
The defender complemented that message with a call for unity by writing: “Let's take care of our country.”
Unlike his response to the criticism, Martínez also dedicated a few words to the new world champion and congratulated Spain for winning the title.
“He congratulated Spain for its well-deserved title,” he said.
Mac Allister and Martínez's publications came just two days after the final played in the United States, where Argentina lost by the slightest difference to the Spanish team. Both footballers made it clear that, despite the result, they maintain pride in the journey made during the tournament and thanked the support received from the Argentine fans.
