The monarch of the World Boxing Association, Rolando Romero, revealed that the boxer of Mexican origin, Ryan García, declined to make a second fight immediately after the confrontation they had last year.

The American boxer argued that the trade talks were in a final phase and accused his counterpart of abandoning the project unilaterally.

According to the testimonies offered by the WBA champion to the specialized channel FightHub TV, the position of the rival corner prevented the public from witnessing the tiebreaker fight in the short term. "They shied away from me. They simply avoided me," the athlete declared to the aforementioned media outlet when detailing the administrative difficulties in coordinating agendas.

Furthermore, Romero added about the process of bilateral talks: "We had an immediate rematch and then we tried to do it again. They just kept avoiding me."

The conditions of the revenge contract

The American boxer explained that the economic and logistical parameters had the approval of the promoters before the talks were definitively interrupted.

Romero explained that personal bets and digital distribution projections had even been established for the evening. "We had everything ready. There was a bet between us, the place, the bags, the distribution of the money had already been defined, absolutely all the details of the rematch were agreed upon," he pointed out to reconstruct the negotiation process.

The stagnation of the work tables caused a prolonged inactivity that affected the sports calendar of the WBA champion's corner during the last cycle of competitions. Romero expressed his disagreement with the counterparty's decision, pointing out that the lack of signatures delayed his voluntary defense plans. "Then he ran away and didn't want to do it anymore. Ryan García made me waste six months of my time," the boxer concluded when analyzing the impact of the failed negotiations on his professional career.

The antecedent in Times Square and the present of the sashes

The rivalry between both athletes originated on May 2, 2025, the date on which they met on a card organized in Times Square, New York.

On that occasion, Romero was awarded the victory by unanimous decision of the judges after sending Ryan García to the canvas during the course of the second episode through a combination of blows.

This result allowed him to take over the vacant welterweight crown of the World Boxing Association.

After the immediate rematch was ruled out, both competitors took different directions within boxing for the course of the following seasons.

The boxer of Mexican origin managed to rebuild his position in the international market by winning the World Boxing Council title against Mario Barrios last February. Currently, Ryan García focuses his preparation to make the first defense of his green and gold belt against the British Conor Benn on September 12.

For his part, the WBA champion had to assimilate a period of inactivity of more than fifteen months after his coronation in New York territory.

The boxer is scheduled to make his official return to the ring on August 22 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he will put his absolute title at stake against the challenger of Honduran origin Teófimo López, a commitment that could pave the way towards a future unification of titles against Ryan García in the medium term.
