Jannik Sinner wins the two-time Wimbledon championship against Zverev
Sinner is the tenth player in the Open Era to successfully defend the Wimbledon men's championship
Jannik Sinner once again confirmed his dominance on the pitch at the All England Club. The Italian retained the Wimbledon title this Sunday by beating the German Alexander Zverev in four sets, a result with which he won the London tournament for the second consecutive year and raised his collection of Grand Slam titles to five.
The world number one needed three hours and 47 minutes to come back from a match that started uphill. After losing the first set in a tight tiebreaker, the tennis player from San Candido reacted to win 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-3 and 6-4 and become the tenth player in the Open Era to successfully defend the Wimbledon men's singles championship.
The victory also allowed him to reach a new statistical milestone: he reached 100 wins in Grand Slam tournaments and won the first major of the season. With this new title, he has two Wimbledons, two Australian Opens and one United States Open, reducing to two the difference in the number of major titles he has won compared to the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who has seven.
The victory further consolidates Sinner's leadership in the world rankings. On Monday he will begin his 79th week as leader of the ATP ranking, a position he has held since after Roland Garros in 2024.
Zverev competed again, but failed to break the Italian's hegemony
The final represented a new opportunity for Alexander Zverev to end a long losing streak against Sinner. However, the German was once again left without an answer at the decisive moment.
Although he won the first set after a very close tiebreaker, the world number one found solutions as the match progressed. The first two sets went by without breaks of serve and were marked by the strength of both with serve.
The balance began to break in the third set, when Sinner got the first break of the match to go up 5-3 and put the match on track. From that moment on, Zverev began to lose physical intensity and ended up losing ground to the current champion.
The 29-year-old German had reached his first Wimbledon final driven by the confidence acquired after winning his first Grand Slam at Roland Garros weeks ago. In addition, he had never faced Sinner on grass before, a factor that fueled expectations of a different duel.
However, recent history repeated itself again. Since the 2023 US Open, Zverev has not managed to defeat the Italian and the fall in London represents his eleventh consecutive defeat against the current world number one.
The final was played in the presence of the Princes of Wales, William and Kate Middleton, as well as numerous sports and entertainment figures who attended the All England Club to witness the outcome of the tournament.
With this achievement, Sinner also became the fourteenth player in history to win more than one Wimbledon and the third active tennis player with multiple titles in London, along with Novak Djokovic, who has seven, and Carlos Alcaraz, who has two.
The Italian thus closed a new dominant performance on the circuit. He has barely lost three games all season and continues to expand a record that already reaches 30 professional titles. As Wimbledon champion, he will also receive a prize of 3.6 million pounds, equivalent to 4,224,240 euros.
