Meta confirmed the launch of optional subscriptions called Plus that arrive this May 2026, but basic use of the applications remains completely free. What is happening is that Mark Zuckerberg's company is opening a new path of income beyond advertising, offering extra functions for those who want to make the most of their social networks.

The confusion arises because the headlines talk about “Meta charges for WhatsApp” when in reality the correct thing is to say that Meta offers optional premium plans with additional features. If you only send messages, upload stories or scroll through your feed, your experience doesn't change at all. Subscriptions are designed for heavy users, content creators, and people looking for greater customization or control over their digital presence.

Prices and what each Plus subscription includes

Meta is already globally rolling out three different plans adapted to each platform. Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus cost $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus is cheaper at $2.99 ​​per month. These prices are for the web version and may vary slightly if you purchase through iOS or Android due to app store fees.

Instagram Plus offers tools that are attractive to creators and very active users. You can see how many people rewatched your Story in aggregate, create unlimited audience lists for Stories beyond the Close Friends option, and feature a story weekly for more views.

You can also extend a story beyond the usual 24 hours, preview stories without appearing as a viewer, search your viewer list, and post directly to your profile without appearing in the followers feed. It also includes animated Super Heart reactions, custom icons for the app, customizable fonts for your bio, and additional pins on your profile.

Facebook Plus offers a similar set of features focused on social expression. WhatsApp Plus focuses more on messaging customization with app themes, custom ringtones, additional pinned chats, list customization, and premium stickers. Each plan is designed for what their platform does best: social media for expression and WhatsApp for personal communication.

Who really needs to pay and what about artificial intelligence?

The casual user who uses social media a few hours a week will see no benefit in subscribing. The extra features are niche and target people who publish content constantly or want to better understand their audience. If your priority is simply keeping in touch with family or consuming content, you're still covered by the traditional free model.

Meta is also testing new AI-focused plans under the Meta One brand. These plans include Meta One Plus for $7.99 per month and Meta One Premium for $19.99, which unlock more capacity for computationally intensive queries. Meta AI remains free for casual users, but premium plans offer deeper reasoning, thinking mode for complex tasks, and more video and image generation capabilities. These AI tests will begin next month in Singapore, Guatemala and Bolivia.

There are also professional plans for creators and businesses that Meta is testing in markets such as Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand and Bangladesh. The Meta One Essential plan costs $14.99 per month and includes the Verified badge and impersonation protection. The Advanced is priced at $49.99 per month and adds features such as appearing higher in searches, a featured Follow button in Reels, deep competitive analytics, and optimized scheduling tools.

The key is to understand that this is optional and layered. Meta Verified still exists separately for verification and protection. Plus plans are for fun features and customization.
