Anthropic will implement usage restrictions in Claude Fable 5
Anthropic enables the purchase of additional credits for those who want to continue using the model without limits.
Anthropic already has a deadline marked on the calendar of all Claude users: promotional access to Claude Fable 5, the company's newest model, ends on July 12, 2026, and from then on the rules of the game change for those who pay a subscription.
What will access to Claude Fable 5 be like?
Since July 1, all payment plans – Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise premium seats – have been enjoying Fable 5 at no additional cost, simply by choosing it in the model selector. But that promotional window closes next Sunday at 11:59:59 PM Pacific Time, and from that moment on the model is no longer included within the usual weekly limit of each plan. In other words, what is a free extra today will depend on another consumption logic, something that should be clear before the date arrives.
Half the quota, the real limit
Here's the detail that matters most to anyone who uses Claude to work every day. During the promotion, each user can allocate up to 50% of their weekly usage limit to Fable 5, and that percentage is consumed faster than with other models in the Claude family. Be careful with an important nuance, that 50% is not a separate quota or an extra gift, but rather it comes out of the same weekly use bag that you already have assigned, so if you have already spent a part of your limit with another model, what you have left available for Fable 5 is reduced in the same proportion. Anthropic explains it with a simple example, if you have already used half of your weekly limit with other models, you only have the other half left to distribute, and that's where Fable 5 comes in with that remainder.
Once that quota allocated to Fable 5 is exhausted, the company offers two paths to move forward. You can purchase additional usage credits, which are billed separately from the subscription and allow you to continue using the model without interruptions, or simply switch to another Claude model and continue working within the remainder of your regular limit. Both options work the same on the web, in the mobile app, in Claude Desktop, in Cowork and in Claude Code, so the experience is consistent no matter where you work from.
Usage credits, the new normal after 12
After the deadline, the scheme is simplified but also becomes stricter. Fable 5 will no longer count towards your plan's free weekly limit, and the only way to continue using it will be to activate and purchase usage credits, which cover anything over and above what is included in your subscription. This also applies to Enterprise plans with seats, although with nuances, premium seats maintain promotional access until July 12 at no extra cost, while standard seats do not directly include Fable 5 unless the organization has enabled usage credits.
It is worth clarifying that this promotion is exclusive to paid plans, so those who use the free version of Claude do not have and will not have access to Fable 5 through this means. It also does not apply to usage through the API, which was always billed at standard rates regardless of this promotion. To access the model you only need to choose “Fable 5” in the selector on the web, desktop or mobile, although in Claude Code version 2.1.170 or later is required for the option to appear.
What is clear is that Anthropic is using these days of July as a kind of massive test for users to get hooked on the capabilities of Fable 5 before the credit model comes into play, a fairly common strategy among AI companies that want the user to try the premium product and then decide if it is worth paying to continue using it.
