Iran creates a defense council after its war with Israel
The new organization will be headed by the president of the Islamic Republic and will be made up of commanders of the Armed Forces
Iran announced this Sunday the creation of a Defense Council to strengthen its military capabilities after its recent war with Israel, indicated a state media.
"The Supreme National Security Council approved the creation of the National Defense Council,” public television reported.
The announcement follows the 12-day war unleashed in June by Israel with the support of the United States.
The new organization would be led by the president of the Islamic Republic and is made up of commanders of the Armed Forces and leaders of the relevant ministries, according to the network.
The Defense Council “examines defense plans” and “reinforces the capabilities of the Armed Forces in a centralized manner,” the channel explained.
War left dozens dead
Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran on June 13, with hundreds of bombings against military, nuclear and official buildings. It killed scientists linked to Iran's nuclear program, which Israel sees as a threat.
Iran responded by firing missiles and drones into Israeli territory and attacked the largest US base in the Middle East, in Qatar.
For its part, the United States bombed the Fordo underground nuclear enrichment site, south of Tehran, and nuclear facilities in Isfahan and Natanz, in the center of the country, on June 22.
More than 1,000 people died in Iran during the conflict, according to authorities in Tehran. Israel, meanwhile, recorded 28 deaths.
