Christian Eriksen suffered a new collapse on the pitch: friendly between Denmark and Ukraine was suspended
The Danish Federation reported that Christian Eriksen is conscious after the collapse
Christian Eriksen suffered a new episode of concern this Sunday during the friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine, a match that was suspended after the footballer collapsed on the pitch 20 minutes into the second half.
The Danish Football Federation reported shortly after that the midfielder was conscious. The final interruption of the match came while the medical services were treating the player at the Odense stadium, in a scene that generated concern among teammates, rivals and fans.
Morten Boesen, the Danish team's doctor, issued a statement in which he stated: "Christian is fine and left the field on his own two feet. From what I see, the pacemaker gave the shock it should have given. He was unconscious for a brief moment, but he regained consciousness very quickly and we immediately contacted him. Now he will undergo further tests at the hospital to find out what caused the incident. We are in constant contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is fine, and he asked me to "I will greet all the players and tell them that he is fine."
The incident occurred in the middle of the international warm-up friendly. Eriksen, 34, currently a Manchester United player, fell to the grass and required immediate medical assistance. Although the situation inevitably aroused memories of what happened at Euro 2021, this time the Danish international managed to get up moments after the collapse.
A precedent that marked the footballer's career
The image of Eriksen collapsed once again referred to the episode experienced on June 12, 2021 during a Euro Cup match between Denmark and Finland. That day, the midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest in the middle of a match in Copenhagen.
Years later, the player himself remembered that moment: “When I was in the ambulance I realized that I was dead.”
Eriksen related that his last memories before losing consciousness were a seemingly routine action within the game. "I remember Maehle makes a lateral, the ball hits me and I pass it with my shin. I feel a little cramp in my calf and then I go."
After that emergency, doctors implanted him with an implantable automatic defibrillator (ICD), a device designed to intervene in the event that his heart presents a serious alteration again. The footballer later managed to return to professional activity and turned his recovery into one of the most notable episodes in recent sport.
The suspension of the friendly between Denmark and Ukraine occurred while the player's condition was being evaluated.
So far, the Danish Federation has only confirmed that Eriksen remained conscious after the incident in Odense, as the world counts down to a FIFA World Cup that will not feature him.
